Riding Amongst the Windmills

Ever since our trip to Keukenhof we have been planning to go see the windmills in Kinderdijk, Holland.  And we FINALLY made it last weekend.  It seemed every weekend the weather reports looked gray and gross so we kept putting it off, but even though the weather was calling for clouds in the morning and rain in the afternoon we decided to risk it and just go!!  And it was so worth the risk...the weather was beautiful!!

We brought our bikes along (because seriously there is no better place in the world to ride a bike than The Netherlands) and had so much fun riding around the area...and admiring the 19 beautifully maintained windmills that have survived here since 1740!

I think the thing that amazed me most, is people apparently live in these windmills.
It's hard to see, but here is a couple eating lunch out front of their windmill.

Here is a map of the whole area.  We were surrounded by water...which is the purpose of the windmills...to pump the water out...although most of it is pumped by electric pumps now.  It was such a neat experience and now I want to go back every weekend and ride amongst the windmills :o)  Hope Jacob doesn't mind the hour and a half drive it takes to get there :o)  Hehe!
